What Our Patients are Saying

Craig DeMartino

Injury: Back and Leg

Having gone through the process of healing and working with the doctors and therapists, I cannot tell you how excited I am for Berkana to be opened. In 2002 I broke my back and had to have my leg amputated after a climbing accident. I was told that my new life was going to be one of pain and limited mobility and that walking again would be tough, let alone returning to climbing and the activities that I love. I felt as if the information given to me at that time really set me up to fail. If I had always followed the advice of my therapists and doctors, I would have not been able to accomplish the things I have. I believe the Berkana approach of taking each patient on a case-by-case basis and helping them to thrive both inside and out, is a huge step in the healing process. I look forward to seeing all the stories of success, hard work, and care that will come from Berkana.

After his physical therapy, Craig is again able to participate in the sport he loves—rock climbing. And he has won several gold medals at a number of rock climbing competitions since his injury.

Amy Howard

Former Executive Director of The Davis Phinney Foundation

The Davis Phinney Foundation is a national Parkinson's foundation with the mission of helping people with Parkinson's to live well today. The majority of these new PD patients will not have access to the type of programs, clinicians and support that will be required to manage this chronic disease. We believe, and research is beginning to show, an important key to success in slowing disease progression will be to provide a more integrated care model for treating PD.

The mission of the Berkana Rehabilitation supports the need to shift current care by providing a focus on health and wellness and helping people more fully engage in life. An approach like this will certainly result in improved quality of life for both patients and their caregivers. We, however, also believe a more integrated model of care will result in reduced costs by potentially reducing the amount of medications, falls and inpatient treatment needs for this population. We look forward to working with Berkana to inspire, inform and support people living with Parkinson's disease today.
